Ingredients for Easy mild chana dal Curry

There are many varieties of dried chick peas. Their color ranges from white to dark brown. Any of the available variety is suitable for this curry. Using canned chick pea (garbanzo beans) is the easiest as it does not require prior cooking. Dried peas are cheap.

I bought the chana masala powder from the store. You can make it yourself also. I give the ingredients for making chana masala powder below. This masala powder is very flavourful and you can use it in any vegetable or meat curry and soups and stews. In Northern India, chana means garbanzo beans. This spice mix is used to cook garbanzo beans (chick peas).

Preparation
I used dried chick peas. You can use canned beans. If you are using canned beans it is not necessary to cook it.

Soak the dried chick peas overnight. Drain and discard the water,

It is best cooked in a pressure cooker. I did not have one so I cooked it in a pan.

Put the soaked peas in a large pan.

Add enough water to cover the peas and be one inch above the peas. We need a lot of water because these peas take a long time to cook. I boil water in a kettle and add to the boiling chickpea when water is needed.

Bring to the boil and reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan with the lid slightly opened.  Let is simmer for 1 and a half hour or until the peas are soft.

Do not add salt from the beginning add after it is boiled and cook for 10 minutes.

The cooking time will depend on the type of peas. Some peas will take much longer to become soft.
When the peas are soft, remove the pan from the heat and drain and discard the liquid. Set the cooked peas aside.

Method
In a medium sized pot, add the oil and heat it up. When the oil is hot reduce the heat to medium low and add onion, green chilies.

Add garlic, ginger and curry leaves. Stir-fry the ingredients for about 8 to 10 minutes or until the onions are translucent.
