Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin is the oxygen transporting protein found in the red blood cells. This protein contains iron. It carries oxygen from the lungs to various parts of the body. There it releases the oxygen which is used to convert the nutrients into energy in a process called metabolism. It also transports carbon dioxide and nitric oxide.

Hemoglobin level in the blood is expressed in terms of grams per deciliter (dL 100 milliliter). Adult males will have 14 to 18 grams per dL and adult women 12 to 16 gm/dL. Men after middle age will have 12.4 to 14.9 gm/dL and women 11.7 to 13.8 gm/dL.

A low hemoglobin count is 13.5 gm/dL for men and 12 gm/dL in women. A low hemoglobin count is referred to as anaemia. A low hemoglobin count may be result of some disease or interaction of certain medications. Cancer, hyper thyroids, cirrhosis, iron deficiency, kidney disease, lead poisoning and leukemia may cause hemoglobin deficiency. Some anti-retro viral drugs for HIV infection and chemotherapy drugs may also cause anaemia.

Loss of blood such as in the case of bleeding from a wound, heavy menstruation and internal hemorrhage may also cause hemoglobin deficiency.

Sickle cell disease alters some hemoglobin molecules to be defective. Dead or dying sickle cells may clog up the spleen. Spleen has the function of removing the sickle cell debris from the blood. Excessive work for spleen will damage it and eventually may result /in surgical removal of it.
Red blood cells are produced by the bone marrow. Normal red blood cells have a life span of 120 days whereas the sickle cells will die in 10 to 20 days.

We have some 20 to 30 trillion red blood cells. Each red blood cell has about 270 million hemoglobin protein particles. So we have a lot of hemoglobin particles in our system.

My husband was dieting. After losing some weight his blood test indicated a drastic drop in hemoglobin count. Therefore while dieting make sure that you consume adequate amount of iron rich food.
Hemoglobin count is determined by a blood test. For haemoglobin deficiency, take iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Folic acid and Folate. Pulses and beans raise haemoglobin levels.
Avoid iron blockers, oxalic acid foods and food with gluten.

Foods rich in iron such as spinach, broccoli, chard, beet root, beans, lentils, asparagus, sesame seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, chickpea, dried peaches, dates, apricot, raisins, cocoa powder, whole grain, pomegranate, eggs, spices, meat and fish will improve your hemoglobin count.
